About ‘A little bird on the lookout’ by Robert Jan Smit

The whinchat is not a bird that draws attention to itself. No bright colours screaming for attention from afar, no exuberant behaviour that immediately catches the eye. And yet – if you pause for a moment and look closely, you’ll discover a world of subtlety and precision. In this photo, the whinchat sits on a simple twig, a natural vantage point in the middle of its habitat.
From this position, it keeps a close watch on its surroundings. Every sound, every movement in the grass could be significant. Insects are its main source of food, and speed and timing are essential. A moment’s stillness, observation, and then suddenly a short, purposeful flight. It is a rhythm that repeats endlessly, yet never becomes mechanical – rather, it has something meditative about it.
What makes the whinchat special is the balance between vulnerability and control. It looks light and almost fragile on its branch, yet at the same time exudes a certain determination. As if it knows exactly what it is doing and where it needs to be. That combination gives the photograph its power: simplicity without emptiness, tranquillity without stagnation.
The landscape in which the small copper lives – open fields, rugged grasslands – is under pressure. It is precisely for this reason that every encounter with this species becomes more precious. It is a reminder of how important space, silence and biodiversity are.
This photograph captures a brief moment, yet tells a larger story. About attention, about presence, and about the art of looking. Because sometimes beauty lies not in what moves, but precisely in what remains still for a moment.
Photography has been my passion since 1975. Whereas in the past I often photographed people, I now mainly focus on photographing landscapes, nature and animals.
