About the artwork

A legendary fighter from the Second World War: the Supermarine Spitfire!

This is a Spitfire Mk. IX, built in 1943.
It ended up in Virginia Beach after many wanderings. It is owned by the Military Aviation Museum. It is restored and ready to fly.

The Supermarine Spitfire was a British fighter. The aircraft was put into production in 1938 by Supermarine Division, Vickers Armstrong Ltd. The aircraft was used by the Allies during the Second World War, mainly by the RAF. A total of 20,340 examples were built. There was also a Seafire variant, of which 2,594 were built.

The Spitfire stands out because of its streamline and elliptical wings. The Mk. XIV version reached a maximum speed of 721 km/h at an altitude of 8,000 meters. The aircraft is best known for the decisive role it played during the Battle of Britain.

I took this photo on April 26, 2016. At the Military Aviation Museum in Virginia Beach. The engine cover is off because of the maintenance that was done and the engine test that was done at the time.
