A curled, jagged cardoon leaf amongst the autumn leaves

by Silva Wischeropp

I captured this floral photograph on 26 September 2026 in the late afternoon. The photograph was taken with a NIKON D800 (lens: NIKKOR 24.0–70.0 mm f/2.8).

Wild teasels, with their curled and jagged, robust brown leaves, take on an extraordinary, almost architectural aesthetic in the autumnal light, making them one of the most sought-after subjects in autumn nature photography. Their dry, sculptural form contrasts fascinatingly with the soft, warm lighting of the season.

The interplay of light and structure
Graphic silhouettes in backlight:
Thanks to their imposing size and distinctive, spiky seed heads, teasels are perfect for photography in the low backlight of the golden hour. The contours of the delicate bracts stand out with razor-sharp clarity.

Glowing corona (halo effect):
The warm autumn light catches in the countless tiny spines and bristles of the dried flower head. This creates a glowing ring (rim light) around the plant, which visually separates it from the background and lends it an almost magical aura.
Macro-scale structures:
For macro photography, the mathematically precise arrangement of the seed heads’ honeycomb structures offers fascinating geometric patterns.
When early autumn mist, dew or cobwebs become caught in these delicate structures, they glisten like diamonds in the sunlight.
Contrasts in colour and texture:
Whilst nature glows in warm earthy and golden tones in autumn, the matt grey-brown of the withered teasel provides a rough, textured contrast to the often soft-focused (bokeh), colourful background.
