A Moment to Myself by Color Square

The work depicts a woman in a moment of tranquillity, holding a warm cup of coffee or tea. Her face remains largely hidden behind the steaming mug, causing the viewer’s attention to shift naturally to her hands and posture. She cups the mug with both hands, as if holding not only the drink but also its warmth. This lends the everyday gesture an intimate and contemplative quality. The painterly quality is strikingly evident. Coarse and fine brushstrokes intermingle, whilst parts of the canvas appear deliberately unfinished. The warm skin tones blend almost imperceptibly into cream, beige, rust-brown and ochre. In contrast, the dark stripes of her clothing and her deep hair provide rhythm and contrast. In particular, the loose strand of hair to the left of her face is a small but characteristic detail that lends the portrait a sense of spontaneity.
The jewellery is also striking: a subtle bracelet and small details around the wrist lend the scene a personal elegance. The thin wisp of steam rising from the mug is barely visible, yet it enhances the sense of warmth and a moment of pause.
Ultimately, the work is not so much about coffee as it is about a moment to oneself. A morning ritual, a brief silence or a few minutes in which the world briefly fades into the background. It is precisely this recognisable simplicity that gives this modern portrait of a woman its warm appeal.
