About the artwork

The digital artwork "Het Wapen van Bunnik" combines graphic clarity with symbolic charge. The image is composed of a rigid grid of black lines, inspired by the work of Piet Mondrian, in which white areas are interspersed with subtle accents of red and a surrounding field of light green. This geometric composition suggests order, structure and rationality - perhaps a reference to the organised nature of the municipality of Bunnik or Dutch identity in a broader sense.

At first glance, the work appears abstract and decorative, but the addition of two powerful elements gives it a deeper, more confrontational layer. At the bottom left of the image is a realistically depicted firearm, a pistol, standing out sharply against the graphic background. At the top right, a bullet impact can be seen, complete with glass shards and cracks spreading like a spider's web. These elements literally and figuratively break the order of the grid.

The title "The Weapon of Bunnik" plays with ambiguity. On the one hand, 'weapon' refers to a firearm, a symbol of violence or power. On the other hand, it evokes memories of a municipal coat of arms or heraldry - traditionally a sign of identity and pride. This contrast between destruction and representation, between chaos and control, makes the artwork intriguing and multi-layered. It asks questions about security, identity, and the tensions that can exist beneath a seemingly harmonious surface. "Het Wapen van Bunnik" is thus a powerful visual statement about contemporary social paradoxes.
