An island in the middle of the Atlantic. Not the first place you think of when you think of viticulture. Yet Pico wine is grown on the Azores, and how! The vines are planted in grooves between the lava: first soil in, followed by the vine. Around these vines, low walls are built of black lava stones to protect the wine from salt water and wind. These stones also give off heat.
A perfect place for a walk among the vineyards is Criação Velha. A black wave of vineyards, an authentic red mill with white sails in the middle, the sea in front of you and volcano Pico at your back. It doesn't get more photogenic than this.
