This digital artwork shows a mirrored image of the former Wittevrouwen police station, a national monument with a characteristic historical appearance. The mirroring creates an alienating effect that invites a reappraisal of the familiar Utrecht street scene. To the left in the foreground is a classic lamppost whose slender form forms a visual anchor point, leading the eye into the image.
Behind the lamppost, an unexpected element appears: graffiti in the form of a large, open mouth, predominantly red in colour. This expressive, almost screaming image adds a raw, urban dynamic to the composition and contrasts sharply with the monumental character of the building.
The former police station is central to the work. It is executed in light plaster, giving the facades a smooth and subdued appearance. The symmetry of the architecture and the clean lines underline the formal function the building once had. On top of the roof is a turret with two bells, symbols of order and control. Below it, the municipal coat of arms is visible, a silent testimony to the official character of the building.
The reflection subtly distorts the familiar reality and invites reflection. The work exposes a tension between past and present, authority and expression, structure and spontaneity. In doing so, it penetratingly captures the changing role of urban space and heritage.
