Hèhè, finally a decent backdrop again', we are loudly told. We have hardly arrived at a very cosy parking place at the Iwemalaan in Niebert, when one of us slams the car door, enters the VV Westerkwartier building in Niebert, passes the cash register and turns around the centre line towards the Nieberter windmill. I admit guys, I had already spotted him'. Those who have nothing to do with groundhopping can hardly imagine this enthusiasm. But when a sports complex has an eye catcher, we are sold.
The windmill also plays a prominent role in the football club that has upheld the honour of the villages Nuis and Niebert since 1933. Not only is the accommodation where we have arrived called Sportpark De Wieken, but for many years the name of the local football pride listened to the name Sportverening Molenhorn, in short SVMH. In July 2019, that club joined forces with nearby Boerakker to keep football viable in the area. In their first season, Westerkwartier's flagship narrowly missed out on promotion and this season, too, the team started the league off nicely. But then a virus threw a spanner in the works.
While some dark clouds blow by, we make a quiet tour through De Wieken. A photogenic sports park we judge, although the footballers of Westerkwartier might not think so themselves.
