About "the Dark Night of the Soul"

About the artwork

A woman wears a flaming crown. Half of her face is human, the other half is that of a sugar skull, a skeleton. The background is also divided into two; a warm colour and a cooler one. I like to work with layers. In this work, I wanted to use them to depict liveliness and death side by side, also depicting death cheerfully just like the 'Dias de los Muertos' in Mexico. Accordingly, half the face is a 'sugar skull', something Mexicans paint on their faces with face paint to celebrate their dead. For me, death and dream lie side by side. Every night, we take a break from our daily existence and are away from our bodies for a while. Death is part of life, especially in the culture I come from. For me, it is not a morbid image, but one that interweaves Catholic imagery with illustration. The woman as queen of the night, the woman as queen of the dream and the woman as queen of her destiny. This is a collage made of several layers of paper, which are painted and where drawing elements are used. The whole thing has been meticulously post-processed in photoshop. I think it is a telling work that will appeal to people with a preference for illustration and graphic work. People with an affinity for Catholic imagery and tattoos will also appreciate it.

About Karolina Grenczyk

My work distinguishes itself by strong colours and clear shapes. I work with ecoline, ink and pencil, but I also like to cut and paste.
I get my inspiration from nature and like to daydream. Animals and people sometimes seem to melt together in these reveries.
