Thick wooden poles, dowels, stand in the water. It is nighttime. They are illuminated by the red traffic lights on the bridge that belong to shipping. The bridge does not open and is not operated. It is very atmospheric. The red stands out beautifully against the dark water. In the heavy wood, you can see the thick grain and weathering.
The variation in light, the white bands, come from the headlights of cars's driving over the bridge.
It is a brake work at a bridge, which protects the concrete bridge from collisions. A ship can veer off course and hit the wooden beams. These will spring along and take the energy out of the collision. The impact of a (loaded) ship causing a collision can be very large. A bridge becomes dislocated and can no longer open or close.
