Originally, the budgerigar is a bird native to Australia. This bird is bred and kept in captivity in many western countries. Furthermore, the term "parakeet" is a general term for smaller parrots from different taxonomic groups. If a bird is called parakeet, it does not mean that it is closely related to other birds called parakeets. However, all birds called parakeets do belong to the order of parrots (Psittaciformes).
