Nutmeg is a spice derived from the nutmeg tree (Myristica fragrans), which is cultivated in rainy tropical coastal areas. The nutmeg is oval in shape and about two and a half centimetres long. The nutmeg is very hard: in the kitchen the nutmeg is therefore only used in grated form (nutmeg). There is factory-ground nutmeg on the market, but one can buy nutmeg nuts and grate them with a nutmeg grater. The word nutmeg is a corruption of the Latin "nuces moschatae", which means "notes smelling of musk".
