This mixed media work shows a straight, continuous row of Amsterdam canal houses, captured in a combination of photography and watercolour. The photographic base provides a sharp and recognisable foundation: the characteristic facades, tall windows and narrow proportions can be immediately placed within Amsterdam's historic cityscape. Over this lies a layer of watercolour that softens and transforms the whole, balancing the work between documentation and interpretation.

The buildings are tightly juxtaposed in a horizontal composition, emphasising the rhythm and repetition of the façade architecture. Vertical lines of windows, window frames and lifting beams create an orderly pattern, while subtle variations in roofline and gable width create tension and individuality. The watercolour introduces smooth gradients and slight fading, dissolving some details and accentuating others. This interplay gives the work a poetic layering and a sense of temporality.

The use of colour is subdued but rich, with earth tones, soft greys and accents of blue and ochre that reference sky, water and brick. The combination of photographic precision and painterly freedom evokes associations with the work of artists such as Gerhard Richter, with his faded photographic works, and Edward Hopper, in the quiet focus on urban architecture. Contemporary mixed-media cityscapes and watercolour interpretations of urban facades also connect substantively to this work. The result is a hushed exploration of Amsterdam canal houses, in which realism and artistic imagination merge.
