The name lavender is derived from the Latin lavare meaning wash. Indeed, the ancient Greeks and Romans used lavender to perfume their baths. Actually, little has changed since then. Lavender is still widely cultivated, especially in France, because of the lavender oil pressed from the flowers.
That oil is used as a fragrance in cosmetics such as soap and perfume. Personally, I also like to shower with a shower gel that smells of lavender. The scent of lavender has a calming effect so that the stress of a busy working day is rinsed away. Dried lavender can be made into scented bags for the linen closet. This used to be done to chase away moths. Now we do it mainly because it smells good.
