Gondolas are the symbol of the city of Venice. Nowadays, the traditional means of transport is mainly used by tourists. The construction of a gondola is real craftsmanship and takes several months.
A gondola is 10.85 metres long and 1.42 metres wide. The ferro die prua, the bow fitting, has the shape of the doge's headdress at the top. The six prongs below symbolise the six sestieri of Venice: San Marco, Dorsoduro, San Polo, Cannaregio, Castello and Santa Croce. The prong facing backwards stands for La Giudecca.
A gondola is made of seven different woods: Oak, walnut, larch, elm, mahogany, fir and cherry.
