Phaëton (Ancient Greek: Φαέϑων), also called Phaëthon, is a figure in Greek mythology. The heros Phaëton is a son of the sun god Helios and Clymene (in some traditions he was the son of Apollo and Clymene).
Helios used to mount the sun chariot every day. Phaeton's greatest wish was to ride on this chariot as well, and one day he seized the opportunity. The horses however noticed that someone else held the reins and bolted. The sun chariot skimmed past the earth and the heat caused large dry areas to appear: the deserts. Before the whole earth was set on fire, the supreme god Zeus decided to intervene. He threw a bolt of lightning at Phaeton, which caused the latter to fall out of the chariot, plummet to the ground and die.
