About the artwork

Maria Antonia Josepha Johanna (Vienna, November 2, 1755 - Paris, October 16, 1793), known in French as Marie-Antoinette, was the wife of King Louis XVI of France, and thus Queen of France.

As dauphine and queen, Marie Antoinette was expected to set the tone in fashion, but her exaggeratedly high hairstyles and her passion for jewelry with diamonds, precious Japanese lacquerwork, furniture with inlaid mother-of-pearl and petrified wood, and her high tailoring bills caused annoyance.

Rumours that Marie Antoinette was a lesbian, queer, bisexual or nymphomaniac were never proven. Her opponents circulated gossip about her, saying she indulged in sex with everyone.

Etching and aquatint in colour, printed from several plates.

Jean-François Janinet or François Janinet, born in 1752 in Paris where he died on 1 November 1814, was a French engraver and balloonist.

Active towards the end of the Ancien Régime and during the French Revolution, who took an innovative approach to colour engraving.
