In a magazine of the 'Natuurmonumenten' foundation, I found this image of two deer. The image struck me immediately. Adorable and tender is the way this doe caresses her calf with a gentle kiss on the young animal's cheek.
Deer are mammals with short-haired grey-brown fur, a lithe body and slender legs. The ears are set high and on the side of the head the proverbial russet eyes. You find them along the forest edge, in scrubland and on heathland. And the calf? It has a spotted coat when it is born, for a good reason: if the calf is hidden in the tall grass or among the bushes, it is almost invisible: excellent camouflage.
I usually paint with acrylic or watercolour, but for this painting I used oil paint. The result is great thanks to this creamy material that can be easily mixed on the panel.
All in all, a painting with an image I cannot look at enough. Maybe this mother and child will soon be hanging on your wall too!
