Oirschot (1903)
In 1903 Castle Bijsterveld in Oirschot was bought for 20.000 guilders as scholasticate. Superior Jean Péré and 19 brothers arrived on October 26, 1903. In the first years the scholasticate still had the classical structure: two years of philosophy and four of theology. By 1908 that number had risen to 44 and at the outbreak of World War I the scholasticate numbered over 60 brothers. Almost all of the French scholastics returned to their homeland for military service. After the war, four of them returned for a year. In October 1928 the silver jubilee of the scholasticate Bijsterveld was celebrated. At that time the scholasticate produced 163 priests: 101 Dutch, 44 French, 2 Germans, 2 Belgians, 1 Dane and 1 Icelander (and 12 seculars). They work in: Vancouver, Iceland, Denmark, Colombia, Vaupes, Haiti, Nyasaland and Mozambique. And in the early 1930s, the monastery expanded with the construction of the left wing, which connected directly to the outdoor chapel. In the scholasticate in 1947 there are 14 Fathers, 10 Brothers with 3 postulants and 66 scholastics. The highlight of the year was the celebration of Montfort's canonization. Between 1958 and 1967 124 brothers started their studies of philosophy. The highest number (22) in 1958, the lowest (4) in 1967. In the same period 127 brothers start theology. Until 1966 the number dwindles to 33.
