About "analogue photo of a young horse's mane"

by Karen Velleman

About the artwork

A detail shot in black and white, captured in analogue: the mane of a young horse, caught in stationary motion. No face, no surroundings - just the soft, wild lines of the hair, undulating over a light or dark coat. The image is intimate, almost abstract. The analogue film grain makes the texture tangible: each strand of hair seems loosely drawn with graphite.

The mane is even thinner, finer than in an adult animal. Uncombed, wayward. They fan out, as if a breeze has just passed by. The background is blurred, out of focus - all attention goes to the shape, the shades, the contrast between shiny light and deep shadowy grey.

Without colour, the mane does not become "beautiful", but pure. The photo reveals the growth, the fragile strength of a young body in the making.

There is calm in it, but also tension - a promise of movement. As if the horse might shake its head at any moment and the picture goes up in smoke.

A sculpture that wants to explain nothing, only look.
