Evening view at the front facade of the Zwolle train station in Overijssel, The Netherlands.
The main building of Zwolle train station is an example of neoclassical architecture, dating back to 1868. Designed by the Maatschappij tot Exploitatie Staatsspoorwegen, the structure is characterized by its symmetrical façade with a prominent triangular pediment and pilasters. The building’s central portion is raised, flanked by two lower wings, giving it an elegant and balanced appearance. The platform-side features a row of arched windows, originally covered by a large iron canopy, now preserved in part. The building’s neoclassical style combines clean, white plastered surfaces with classical detailing, making it both monumental and refined. After renovations in recent years, the interior was modernized while maintaining its historical essence, with added spaces like the “Kamer van de Stad”, a public area for travelers. The building is a rijksmonument, embodying Zwolle’s rich architectural and railway history.
