Zwolle’s historic city centre during the blue hour by Bas van der Gronde

This photograph shows Zwolle from the air, taken during the blue hour. That is the moment just after sunset. The sky is still blue at this time, whilst the streetlights are already on. This creates a beautiful contrast between the blue light of the sky and the warm orange light of the streets. The photograph was taken directly from above, directly over the historic city centre. You can see a church tower, a market square and a number of streets converging at a junction. The roofs are close together, with the occasional green roof or courtyard in between. This pattern of streets and squares is hundreds of years old and still follows the original town layout from the Middle Ages. You never see this so clearly from ground level. From above, the city’s layout becomes visible at a glance: the centre with the oldest buildings, and surrounding it the streets that branch out like veins through the neighbourhood.

Zwolle is the capital of Overijssel. The city is known for its well-preserved historic centre, with church towers, canals and narrow streets. This photo shows just how special and compact the city centre actually is. This aerial photo is ideal for people who love cityscapes, or for anyone with a connection to Zwolle. You can have the photo printed in various sizes. It makes a lovely addition to your home or office, and is also a great gift for someone who loves Zwolle.
