Tough city gates protect access to the port. Anyone who approached medieval Zierikzee by ship must have been impressed by the city's defenses. The canals, walls and Zierikzee used to become a solid fortress. Zierikzee still has that character, although the walls and part of the gates have disappeared. Zierikzee is not wrongly called a city like a castle. Both port gates date back to the 14th century. They were later expanded, remodeled and embellished. The city had to withstand three heavy sieges in the early 14th century. In order to withstand new enemies, the city defenses were renewed. These two gates, among other things, were the result.
