An important Zeeland historical location, attractively illuminated at dusk in the blue hour. After it was completed in 1907, the Zuiderhoofd served not only as a pile head and as unloading point for dike materials. Sheds were also cordoned off and used recreationally. The pile head was severely damaged during the Second World War. The platform, which had already been removed in the war years, only partly returned, as a walkway about 55 cm wide on the right side of the pole head. In the sixties the width of this walkway was doubled; in the eighties a complete platform came back, as well as a railing on both sides. Maintenance was constantly needed, because the salty seawater that hits the boards at high waves causes the wood to suffer a lot. The last refurbishment was completed in 2011. The gangway is now also popular with (sports) fishermen and swimmers (who dive off).
