At 2962 metres above sea level, the Zugspitze is the highest peak in the Wetterstein mountain range and Germany's highest mountain. The Zugspitze massif lies to the south-west of Garmisch-Partenkirchen.
The Chapel of the Visitation of the Virgin Mary is located on the Zugspitzplatt on the Schneeferner at 2600 metres above sea level, making it Germany's highest church. The station of the Bavarian Zugspitze railway is right next door. This is also the hub of the Zugspitze glacier ski area. The lowest point of the ski area is at the valley station of the Brunntal lift at around 2000 metres, the highest point at the Schneefernerkopf lift at 2720 metres.
Garmisch-Partenkirchen consists of two villages that were united in 1935. The Zugspitze can be easily reached from Garmisch using the cable cars operated by Bayerische Zugspitzbahn Bergbahn AG. We recommend a "round trip" with the Zugspitze cable car, the cog railway and the glacier railway. During the journey, you will always have an impressive view of the surrounding mountains and valleys.
