Ypey windmill in the Ryptsjerksterpolder at sunset – skaters with mirror-like reflections

by KB Design & Photography (Karen Brouwer)

This atmospheric winter photograph depicts the iconic Ypeymolen windmill in the Ryptsjerksterpolder (Friesland), beautifully captured during a serene sunset. The vast, flooded land is partially frozen and reflects the windmill, the sky and the soft evening light in an almost picturesque way. In the distance, silhouettes of skaters glide across the ice, giving the scene a lively but subdued dynamic.

The warm tones of the setting sun contrast subtly with the cool winter atmosphere of the water and air. The windmill stands proudly on the edge of the polder and forms a strong, recognisable centrepiece in this vast Frisian landscape. The reflection in the wet land enhances the depth of the composition and draws the viewer into the image.

This photograph captures not only a moment, but a feeling: the tranquillity of the countryside, the magic of winter light and the timeless charm of Dutch windmills. As wall decoration, this image works particularly well in both modern and rural interiors. Perfect for lovers of nature, water landscapes and authentic Dutch heritage.
