Carl Ludwig Jessen (22 February 1833 in Deezbüll, Duchy of Schleswig, between Schleswig-Holstein in Germany and Denmark, 4 January 1917) was a Frisian painter. He is still known today as the "Frisian painter". Its importance lies in the description of North Frisian agricultural culture.
After an apprenticeship as a carpenter, Jessen worked as a chamber painter at the Marschhöfe in Northern Friesland. 1869-1870 he lived in Klockries, Hamburg from 1871 to 1875. After that he returned to Deezbüll and devoted himself exclusively to depicting the life of people in his Frisian homeland, especially on the islands of Amrum and Föhr.
