"Stroking the Cat" was created in 1924, during the last of Xu's four years of study at the Higher School of Fine Arts in Paris, France. The year he graduated, he was in an extraordinarily creative state of mind. The creations he made that year, whether they were paintings or sketches, generally had high artistic value. Both Xu Beihong and Jiang Biwei were fond of cats. Xu had cats all his life and showed them in some of the Chinese paintings he made. In one of their few portraits as a couple, Xu depicted them petting a cat. This relatively relaxed scene from everyday life feels pleasant and relaxing.
Xu Beihong (19 July 1895 - 26 September 1953) was a Chinese painter from Yixing, Jiangsu province. He is best known for his ink paintings of horses and birds. In 1915, he moved to Shanghai. Here he lived off selling his works. In 1917, he travelled to Tokyo in Japan to study painting here. Back in China, he was given a chair at Peking University. From 1919, Xu studied at the École nationale supérieure des beaux-arts in Paris.
