Because circumcision is the moment when the girls - aged seven to fifteen - can be married off. Together with the Masai and with respect for all parties, Amref has found a way to reconcile tradition and progress, an alternative ritual for female circumcision. So far the adapted rituals have taken place in the areas Loitokitok, Magadi, Samburu (Kenya) and Kilindi (Tanzania). Already 15,000 girls took part. They celebrated the transition from girls to women without bloodshed.
