Landscape with a flock of sheep with shepherd. The Kempen (formerly called Kempenland or Toxandria) are a diluvial sandy region in northeastern Belgium and the Dutch province of North Brabant, south of the Eindhoven-Tilburg line. The Flemish Kempen take up most of the province of Antwerp. From the 14th century, the wasteland around the villages and liberties in the Kempen was used as communal heathland for plaggenland farming and sheep rearing. Florent Nicolas Crabeels (Antwerp, Flanders, Belgium 5 December 1829 - 7 June 1896) was a Belgian genre and landscape painter. He studied at the Royal Academy of Fine Arts in Antwerp, initially painting scenes from villages and small town markets. Later, he turned to landscapes from the Kempen region and became an avid proponent of painting en plein aire. He did much of his work in the artists' colony in Wechelderzande. In 1886, he was one of the founding members of "L'Art Indépendant".
