Windmill De Noord on Oostplein survived the bombing of Rotterdam in 1940, but was destroyed by a fire in 1954. A proposal to rebuild was rejected by the city council; the mill was in traffic's way anyway. that's how Oostplein turned into the windy traffic junction that really does not deserve the name square.
After 60 years however, the mill has been rebuilt, though at the time being only in the virtual sense. Not quite on the original site; which was closer to the end of Hoogtraat, but yeah, that traffic, right....?
In the mill there's a tavern with a terrace where sandwiches are served with home-ground flour. The largely stony square has been radically greened; it might still not really be a square but in any case it's a park.
Well, for now it's only virtual but you never know ...
