The Adriaan was opened on 19 May 1779. Located on the river Spaarne, at the time on the outskirts of the city, the windmill was built on the existing foundations of the former Goe Vrouwtoren. The Goe Vrouwtoren was part of the old fortification around Haarlem. Because the mill was built on top of the tower's foundations, it stood high and thus caught a lot of wind.
