William-Adolphe Bouguereau (1825-1905) was a French academic realist painter known for his masterful depictions of the human body and his technical precision. His paintings are characterised by a soft, realistic depiction of skin, fabrics and textures. Bouguereau often created scenes with religious, mythological and allegorical themes, while showcasing classical ideals of beauty. He was a celebrated artist of his time and won numerous awards, but was later overshadowed by modern art movements such as Impressionism. More recently, his work has experienced a renaissance.
