Willemstad in Colour, Curaçao by Renata Rolefes Art

‘Willemstad in Colour’ captures one of Curaçao’s most recognisable views in a fresh and colourful composition. The graceful arches of the Queen Emma Bridge draw the eye towards the characteristic façades of the Handelskade, whilst the clear turquoise waters of Sint Anna Bay in the foreground shimmer in vibrant shades of yellow, orange, pink and blue.

The Queen Emma Bridge, also known as the Pontjesbrug, connects Punda with Otrobanda and, together with the colourful historic architecture, forms an unmistakable symbol of Willemstad. This painting focuses not only on the recognisability of this special place, but above all on the sunny and vibrant character of Curaçao.

The painting is built up from multiple layers of acrylic paint, applied with palette knives, expressive brushstrokes and playful splashes of paint. The soft, light sky gives the work an open and almost airy feel, whilst the vibrant colours in the water create a sense of movement and energy. The colourful façades form, as it were, a cheerful ribbon between sky and sea.

‘Willemstad in Colour’ is more than just a painting of a familiar cityscape. It is an ode to the architecture, history and colourful identity of Curaçao. A sunny work of art that brings the essence of Willemstad into your home: bright, vibrant and unmistakably Caribbean.
