Willem Barentsz 's replica ship 'De Witte Swaen
Willem Barentsz (Formerum, c. 1550 - at sea, 20 June 1597) was a Dutch mariner, cartographer and explorer, who made three voyages to find the Northeast Passage, exploring the coasts of Nova Zembla and discovering Bear Island and Spitsbergen.
That the story of the voyage of Willem Barentsz became widely known in Dutch history is, in addition to the diary of Gerrit de Veer and the poet Hendrik Tollens who published Tafereel van de overwintering op Nova Zembla in 1819, also due to its importance for the cartography of the Northeast Passage.[1] wikipedia
