Portrait of Alonso Quijano who has lost his mind. Adopting the image of a wandering knight, he leaves his home under the name Don Quixote of La Mancha (after his native region) and begins a ramble through the roads and countryside of Spain. Seated on his warhorse Rocinant, basically an old, emaciated peasant tuber which he extols as a thoroughbred, and clad in old rusty armour and a paper helmet, he goes to war against injustice and injustice of all kinds. By doing good deeds, he hopes to become famous and thus gain the favour of his great love, the wonderful Dulcinea. The quest for this courtly and desirable princess (who is his idealisation of Aldonza Lorenzo, a simple peasant daughter from the neighbouring village of El Toboso whom he has never seen and who presumably does not even exist) is a parody of the genre of the amour lointain.
Vilhelm Nicolai (Wilhelm) Marstrand (Copenhagen, Denmark, 24 December 1810 - 25 March 1873) was a Danish painter and is considered an important exponent of the Danish Golden Age. Initially he mainly painted genre pieces, later moving more towards the historical direction, choosing classical mythological and historical scenes. He was director of the Academy in Copenhagen from 1853 to 1857 and from 1863 until his death.
