The golden hour is the period, usually shorter than an hour though, just before sunset or just after sunrise. The sun, just above the horizon, puts everything in a warm, indeed golden light.
An urban photo like this, with modern facades bathed in that beautiful light, is not so easy to take. For a start, it is not that often sunny in the Netherlands, and besides, in the city there are often buildings in the way. Especially in Rotterdam with all its highrise.
So the fact that the buildings on the northern quay of Wijnhaven are so beautifully lit is a stroke of luck, and as a photographer you have to take advantage of it.
We can see a couple of recently built residential towers: Our Domain in the foreground, Casanova, The Muse and 100 Hoog behind them. The building with the wooden box protruding forward is not a residential building but a school building: the Willem de Kooning Academy.
In the lower part of the photo, there are some bits of urban life: some bicycles, umbrellas and fences, a scooter driver and an excavator. You might find it cluttered but with all the gold that otherwise shines in the photo, it is a nice contrast.
My work can be found in the border regions of photography, painting and computer visuals. With my company 3Develop I do work in commission but I use the same techniques, skills and software to make free work.
