The white flamingo is a rarity in Sardinia but can be found at Mari Ermi, a lagoon on the east coast of the island. This unique colour of the flamingo is due to a genetic defect called leucism, in which the pigmentation of the feathers is reduced. Although these flamingos appear white, they often have pink highlights on their feathers due to the presence of blood vessels under the skin. It is an impressive and majestic sight to see these beautiful birds in their natural habitat.
