Tips for use

Point your camera at the floor or a piece of furniture first, then move it slowly up towards the wall. A bare white wall is hard for your phone to recognise.
Move your phone gently from side to side. Holding it still or waving it around quickly does not help.
Make sure there is enough light. In a dark room your phone has nothing to lock onto.

About ‘Where beaks speak, pelicans squabble.’ by Robert Jan Smit

Sometimes it seems as though animals behave just like humans. This photo of two pelicans locked in a noisy confrontation evokes exactly that feeling. With their enormous beaks crossed and their gazes fixed intently on one another, it looks as though a heated argument is taking place, with neither party willing to back down. Pelicans are known for their impressive appearance. Their large wings, long beaks and characteristic throat pouch make them one of the most recognisable waterbirds in the world. Yet this photograph reveals a different side to their behaviour. Instead of the tranquil fisherman gliding patiently across the water, here we see the dynamics of interaction, competition and communication.
The dark background heightens the drama of the moment. All attention is automatically drawn to the two birds, making the powerful lines of their beaks and expressive postures stand out even more. This gives the image an almost theatrical quality, as if the protagonists were on a stage.
Despite the tension, the photograph also exudes a certain elegance. The light-coloured feathers contrast beautifully with the black background, whilst the symmetry of the composition provides balance. The result is an image that is both humorous and impressive, inviting the viewer to imagine their own story behind this encounter. A striking work for lovers of nature, wildlife photography and images with character.
