Dalmatian pelicans are the largest pelicans. They are slenderly built and look elegant despite the hefty size of their bodies. The wingspan is as long as 345 cm. Adult birds can reach a length of 160-180 cm. Also weighing an average of 13 kg, they are among the largest waterfowl. Pelicans also have the largest beaks of any bird. The skin of the lower bill forms a kind of sack. When passed through the water, the sack forms a landing net with which fish are brought to the surface.
Pelicans are true water birds. They prefer to live in deltas, estuaries, lakes and ponds. As they are not too good divers, they do not venture far from the shore. All pelicans are social birds that live together in colonies
The birds often fish in groups. Several individuals work together by herding fish together in a circle. This makes them easier to scoop up with their beaks.
