This species inhabits the western part of Australia and is closely related to the eastern grey kangaroo (Macropus giganteus).
The western grey kangaroo is predominantly active at dusk and during the night. The day is spent resting in the shade of trees. Like other kangaroos, the western grey kangaroo is a herbivore that lives in groups.
During mating season, the males fight for the females' favours, but they also do so for food or resting places. They grab each other and try to push each other over, kicking with their hind legs and leaning on their tails. Injuries are a rare occurrence. This species lives in groups of up to 15 animals, in which only the dominant male reproduces. The gestation period is 30 to 31 days. The young remains in the pouch for 130 to 150 days, attached to the nipple. Around the 250th day, it leaves the pouch for short periods, but dives straight back in when in danger.
