Wernigerode Castle was originally a medieval castle, which was supposed to secure the way of the German emperors of the Middle Ages on their hunting trips to the Harz Mountains. A first castle complex was built above the town of Wernigerode in the early 12th century. The complex has undergone various profound changes in the course of its history.
Wernigerode Castle received its current form in the late 19th century and became a leading building of North German historicism. Today it houses a much-visited museum and a branch of the Saxony-Anhalt Cultural Foundation.
