A beautiful natural environment it is at the Weerter- and Budelerbergen.
Also known as the Weerter- and Buulderbergen (Limburgian: Wieërter- and Beulderbêrge) it is a 912-hectare nature reserve stretching on either side of the border of the Dutch municipalities of Cranendonck and Weert.
Heather grows on this open area and it is now in beautiful bloom.
The area is also used for military exercises again these days.
As a child, I used to go there a lot and found many blanks, which will now also be found on the stretches where the military is practising.
The area is designated under the European Birds Directive to protect rare and endangered bird species.
Breeding birds covered by this protection are the nightjar, stonechat and woodlark. Thirteen Red List species also occur, including yellowhammer, mockingbird, wheatear and dune pipit.
I would love to spot these birds one day with my photo camera.
