In the early 1400s, the Monk Dam was built as part of the second city wall, which was built from 1380 and completed in 1480. The gate is first mentioned in 1435. The name of the gate is believed to come from the Augustinian monks, who had lived at St Andrew's since 1394. The monks moved to De Birkt in 1420. Restorations to the city gate took place in 1946 and 1997.
The Monnikendam is an extant watergate in the Dutch city of Amersfoort. Under this water gate, the water of the Heiligenbergerbeek flows into the city centre. The gate consists of two towers, connected by a gate arch, and stands on the east side of the city centre.
The gate has been issued by the municipality of Amersfoort as a recognised wedding location.
