The Waterpoort in Sneek is perhaps the city's most famous icon. This stone structure is characterised by its two octagonal towers.
The Waterpoort was probably built around 1492, at the same time as the city wall surrounding the town. The gate served to seal off the water access to the city. Since 1613, the Waterpoort has only served as an ornamental gate and no longer has a military defence function.
