National Park Weerribben-Wieden is a national park in the Dutch province of Overijssel, municipalities of Steenwijkerland and Zwartewaterland. The national park is the largest continuous low moorland swamp in north-western Europe.
One human activity that largely determined the character of the area was the exploitation of reeds. Cane cultivation on an extensive scale dates back to the 20th century. In the 1950s-1960s, reed cultivation was hit by a serious crisis. The drainage of the area, due to the construction of the IJsselmeer polders, posed a threat. This problem was eventually solved by the installation of (more than three hundred) water mills, which - contrary to common practice in the Netherlands - did not pump the water out of the drained areas, but rather into them.
