Since ancient times, we humans have felt connected to the four elements to explain our world and visualise our properties and powers. But how would cats interact with the natural elements? My interpretation is to demonstrate the power of each element in its most extreme form, that of natural disasters.
WATER - The grey-striped cat sits on a rock in the middle of the sea during a storm surge. The cat is surrounded by various sea creatures and embraced by the skeleton of a moray eel.
Water symbolises emotion, intuition and healing. It represents the flowing, changing aspect of life and the connection to our deepest feelings. Water represents flexibility, purification and the importance of emotional expression.
I am Jenny Bommert, a German-Dutch illustrator and owner of Puss In Books Illustration. In my art, I combine my love for cats with a touch of darkness and black humour. My inspiration comes from my own cats, nature and gothic influences. Working with both traditional and digital materials, I create art that tells stories and raises a smile, even on serious subjects. I live and work in Zeeland, together with my husband and our two cats.
