Waalbrug Nijmegen January 2015 drawing

front Velorama across new piece under construction
Until 1936 there was no fixed connection for regular traffic to the other side of the Waal. All traffic had to be transferred with flying bridge "Zeldenrust". For rail traffic was since 1879 the railway bridge available.
In 1906 began the Committee "Nijmegen Forward" with making plans for the construction of the Waal Bridge, but the outbreak of the First World War threw a spanner in the works. In 1927, the final plans were made and on October 23, 1931 the construction of the bridge began, according to a design by architect G. Schoorl.

On June 16, 1936 the bridge was opened by Queen Wilhelmina in the presence of 200,000 interested.
At the outbreak of World War II, the Dutch genius blew up the bridge to prevent a rapid advance of the German army. During the occupation the Germans repaired the bridge and he could again be used from 1943 through traffic. On September 20, 1944 the bridge was almost undamaged into the hands of the Allies.

De Waal Bridge is a national monument
De Waal Bridge comes in the film about Operation Market Garden A bridge too far for, and in the game Medal of Honor: Frontline.
