About the artwork
Vogelenzang is a village in the municipality of Bloemendaal, in the Dutch province of North Holland. The village had a population of 2,260 in 2023. The village lies on a beach ridge one kilometre from the Amsterdam Water Supply Dunes, 5 kilometres from the North Sea. Traditionally, the population here lived from flower bulb cultivation. Vogelenzang lies on the northern edge of the Dune and Flowerbulb Region. The area of Vogelenzang used to be part of Den Hout, the large forest that stretched between Alkmaar and Leiden well into the Middle Ages. In this forest, located behind the North Sea dunes, the lords of Brederode, the later counts of Holland, hunted. In the 13th century, a hunting lodge 't Huys te Vogelesang was founded there by Count Floris V of Holland. Some remains of this castle have been found in the soil. Around the Teylingerbosch country estate near Huis te Vogelenzang, the contours of the old moat are still visible in the landscape. The current Huis te Vogelenzang is a 17th-century successor to the hunting lodge.
