Maastricht's Villa Park and adjacent city park are characterised by fine footpaths, rolling lawns and ancient trees. The park is bisected by the fast-flowing river Jeker. The Jeker is dammed upstream with several dams to allow the water to rush forcefully into the city towards the Meuse. Water mills use the power of the fast-flowing water to provide free water power to various businesses, including the bakery De Bisschopsmolen, in the city centre.
The Maastricht park is laid out according to 19th century park architecture where city dwellers can relax in a piece of nature which gives a nostalgic experience.
